The last hurrah

I’m off Hinge. Not that I’ve found someone but I did find that I’ve lost all hope for the apps.

In our digital age, data is probably one of the biggest commodities and the rules surrounding the capture and storage of personal information are incredibly blurred. With this in mind, I researched the generally untold procedure for deleting the app in a way that would also include the deletion of the information that they hold on me.

Foolishly, I thought it would be a simple process of submitting a request, and them replying sure, it’s all done and that’d be it. No, no such luck. You start by submitting your request, after which you are promptly asked to supply some form of ID to verify who you are – fair enough! This is then reviewed and can take a couple of days to complete but once done, they’ll then prepare your data for export.

I actually went through this process twice because after the first verification, it took about 5 weeks for them to come back to me. I don’t know, maybe I was being unreasonable to think that this would’ve been a swift process, particularly in the midst of a pandemic but alas, it was a fairly long wait for the export to be completed and about 3 weeks after they’d confirmed my ID, I stopped diligently checking my emails. This might not had been much of a problem if it wasn’t for the fact after emailing, you’re only given 48hrs to grab your data. I managed to miss this window of opportunity and ended up having to start the whole process again.
